The Battleship Island 2017 (Korea South)

The story takes place towards the end of World War II, on the small island of Hashima off the coast of Nagasaki. “Battleship Island”, named for its shape, is the site of a massive coal mine where 400 Koreans live in deplorable conditions as conscripted labourers. Tensions run high between the Japanese soldiers who maintain order with shocking cruelty and violence, and the Koreans who have been tricked or forced into coming there. Then, just as the island’s dark secrets are revealed, the Koreans plot a dramatic escape.
The cast of Korean stars is led by Song Joong-ki, best known for his role in the highly successful Korean TV series Descendants Of The Sun.
The movie drew attention at the Cannes Film Festival in March, and shortly after its distributors CJ Entertainment announced it had pre-sold to 113 countries including the US, France and Singapore. It also set a record for best opening week in South Korea, clocking up 4 million admissions by July 30, its fifth day.
Chinatown Cinema, L1 Midcity Centre, 200 Bourke Street, will show the movie at a special Premiere screening on Sunday August 6 at 6.15pm. Tickets for this special session cost $20.
At the cinema, there will also be a chance to win an Autographed Movie Poster.
The Battleship Island is also shown at Hoyts Cinema Melbourne Central, Village Cinema Sunshine and Village Century City from 10/8/2017.
